The Model on Stage
Whether Dahlberg is working in installation, film or any other medium, spatiality is of central importance. Architecture is addressed as a political place that influences how we understand ourselves, and how the body and mind experience the outside world.
Jonas Dahlberg presents a series of videos that primarily consist of slow movements through architectural spaces. The videos are created by building miniaturized architectural sets that are filmed using experimental methods.
The spectator experiences unfolding series of spaces, meticulously reproduced to resemble hotel-like rooms and corridors, complete with cornices, mouldings, wallpaper, and ingeniously realistic light sources filtering in through communicating openings and shafts.
While Dahlberg makes no effort to hide the process behindhis piece, it remains convincing as a real film ofan existing fullscale environment. However, the fact that it isn’t endows it with astrangeness that helps its narrative proposition’s fictional vocation. At the same time, it is of course also a real film of a real object. Asthe artist puts it : “ Models are unique, yet represent something elseat the same time. They exist in the no man’s land between space, object, and image.” This no man’s land is also the territory where fictional narrative happens, and the common ground between narrative filmmakers, writers, and an artist like Dahlberg, recording what can be seen through holes in architectural models
The title refers to the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles and to mirroring or “ projecting” yourself on the films. The viewer moving between the screens is surrounded by images that work as mirrors of its inner self.
